Aberlè hosiery ad illustrated by Lucerne and Suzanne McCullough, Vogue, December 1, 1946
Lucerne and Suzanne McCullough were twin sisters, born in Abilene, Texas in 1916. Together they painted murals as New Deal artists for the Treasury Section of Fine Arts. One titled "Black River Canal-1845," was created for the Booneville, New York post office, built in 1937. A study in tempera on canvas, measuring 9x26 in. is housed in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. One titled "Early Clock making," was installed in the Thomaston, Connecticut post office in 1939. Lucerne and Suzanne were two of the original "Toni Twins," modeling the popular do-it-at-home perm product in the 1940s. The sisters enjoyed success as artists and illustrators in New York City throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
